ISSUE PROPOSAL:THE CONTROVERSIES SURROUNDING THE HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS VACCINE
ReplyDeleteThe cervix is a small anatomical structure connecting the vagina and uterus,and serves as the entrance to the uterus itself.For some reason,the outer cell layer of the cervix may undergo changes and become abnormal.This initial change in the epithelial lining is called cervical dysplasia and may progress to become cancer cells in 2 to 10 years. Subsequently,these atypical cells may invade nearby tissues and distant organs,and become deadly.
Cancer of the cervix is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide with higher incidence in underdeveloped countries.Human papilloma virus(HPV)is almost always determined to be the cause of cervical cancer and it is spread through sexual contact.
Here in the United States in 2009,the total new cases recorded is 11,270 and deaths totaling 4,070.I have had great interest in this specialty area of medicine having worked closely with gynecologists in the treatment of gynecological cancers in the developing world such as Nigeria,and wonder how these recent findings and recommendations from the monitoring bodies such as the Center for Disease Control(CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) could influence the incidence of cervical cancer worldwide.
Currently there is no treatment for HPV infection,but in June 2006,the FDA approved a vaccine against HPV for use in women.The current vaccine targets HPV strains 6 and 11,which is reported to cause 90% of genital warts,and the major strains 16 and 18 causing cervical cancer.
The CDC in july 2006 also added HPV vaccine in it's official recommendations that 11-12 year old American girls be given the shots,and even 9 year old girls could receive it,if they are sexually active.
Recently,Texas Governor Rick Perry also issued an executive order for all girls entering sixth grade to get Gardasil,with opt-out exceptions.Even though the observed side effects are generally mild,and the life-threatening allergic reactions for the vaccine are rare,these decisions have become highly controversial as politicians and parents waded into the issue of vaccination with Gardasil.
In summary,my paper will discuss the established relationship between HPV and cervical cancer and other causative factors,some established methods of diagnosis and treatment and the recent decisions by the monitoring agencies and governmental entities to mandate the vaccination in young girls which created lots of controversy and hoopla.
